Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS)

Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) is a therapeutic technique designed to reduce pain, swelling, and recovery time. This increasingly popular treatment is highly effective for soft tissue injuries, muscle spasms, and for athletes seeking faster recovery after intense workouts.

How Does Electrical Muscle Stimulation Work?

This treatment is performed in our office and typically takes just a few minutes. Electrodes are placed on the skin over the affected area, and the device is activated. An electrical current is transmitted into the muscles or soft tissue, with the intensity adjusted based on the injury, its location, and the depth of therapy required.

The electrical current causes the muscles to contract in small, rapid movements. During the session, patients may feel a prickly or tingling sensation, which usually fades once the machine is turned off. Many patients actually find this sensation pleasant.

EMS helps muscles relax and reduces pain and spasms by creating these tiny contractions. It also stimulates the release of endorphins, the body’s natural pain relievers, and may help remove metabolic waste while improving nutrient delivery to promote faster healing of soft tissue.

While back and neck muscles are commonly treated with EMS, the benefits extend to many areas of the body. This therapy is effective for both acute and chronic pain. If you’re experiencing pain or recovering from an injury, ask your chiropractor whether EMS could
be right for you.
